Obituary of Michele I. Cunningham
CUNNINGHAM - Michele I. (nee Wolcott)
Michele was born on October 18, 1948 and passed away on August 18, 2019. She was a gifted artist- always crafting, collaging and making sculptures. Her home and yard were overflowing with plants, treasures, and art. She could make anything grow and propagated dozens of new plants from heirlooms that came from the gardens of her mother and grandmother. Before her mother passed, she spoke to her every day. They were best friends. She was also very close to her brother Lyle. They loved working on projects and going on adventures together. She enjoyed baking, especially with her daughters. She also loved cooking for her grandchildren, their favorites were: bean soup, homemade french fries, and butter chicken. She used many family recipes that were passed down for generations. She was passionate about current events, politics, and social justice and read the NY Times every day. Over the course of her life she read over 10,000 books. She enjoyed all types of books, across many genres from science and history to drama and fiction. Some of her favorite authors were Stephen King, Richard Dawkins, Ann Rice, and David Foster Wallace (she read Infinite Jest twice!). She had an amazing memory and an incredible vocabulary- she would mark and look up any word she came across that she didn’t know. She kept a journal of the weather, day’s events, and world events. She also embroidered many poems. Here is a favorite that she found and modified:
Dear old garden of long ago
Part of my childhood memories
Hollyhocks nod in your farthest row
Underneath the walnut trees
